Thomas Paul Mattes

December 17, 1967 — July 10, 2018

Thomas Paul Mattes, 50, of Kansas City, MO, formerly of Crystal Lake, IL, died Tuesday, July 10, 2018. Tom was born December 17, 1967, in Elk Grove Village, IL, the eldest of three children of Paul and Kathleen (Katschke) Mattes. Tom was a graduate of Crystal Lake Central High School and the University of Illinois-Champagne/Urbana, where he was a member of Psi Upsilon fraternity.

Tom's career began with Seaquist Closures in Crystal Lake, a job that would eventually take him to Connecticut, Wisconsin and England. He then took a position with ConAgra Foods in Omaha. For the past 11 years, Tom worked for Hallmark Cards in Kansas City.

Tom loved baseball. He was a fourth generation, lifelong Cubs fan, and while living in Kansas City became a Royals fan as well. But what Tom loved most was watching his two children, Ben and Bryn, participate in the sports they loved - swimming and baseball. Tom was Ben's first baseball coach.

Survivors include his son, Ben (19); daughter, Bryn (16); wife, Jennifer (O'Connor) Mattes; parents, Kathy and Paul Mattes of Hudson, FL; sister, Jennifer of Tucson, AZ; brother, Ken of Algonquin, IL; and grandmother, Lucille Katschke of Waukesha, WI.
