Garvey, John Martin

April 4, 1982 — July 28, 2021

John Martin Garvey, 39, of the Kansas City Northland, passed peacefully, surrounded by family on July 28, 2021 at his home.

John was born April 4, 1982, in Marceline, MO, the youngest of four children of Denis and Barbara (Oldham) Garvey. He grew up in Brookfield, where he graduated from high school in 2001. John was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Jennifer Dawn Lentz, on October 15, 2004. He received his Bachelor's degree from Missouri Western State University and was a Senior Project Manager/Estimator for Kissick Construction, where he worked the past 13 years. He was a lifelong Catholic and member of St. James parish in Liberty. Survivors include his wife of nearly 17 years, Jennifer; children, Jaxon, Morgan, Benjamin, Marie and Josephine; parents, Denis and Barbara Garvey; siblings, Lisa Sensenich (Phillip), Stephen Garvey (Erin) and Mark Garvey; as well as nieces, nephews, other family members and many friends.

John was a devoted husband and father. He loved spending time with his kids and they along with his wife were his top priority. He cheered and supported his children in their various choices of clubs and sports, and enjoyed having epic chess battles and super smash bro competitions with them. His favorite past times were Friday night pizza parties with his family, patio date nights with his wife, hosting “Garvey-cues”, and making giant pancakes or biscuits and gravy on Saturday mornings (these were known far and wide in the Garvey household as the best around). John loved watching football, baseball, playing golf and was an all around lover of sports. He had many friends from the Brookfield/ surrounding area as well as from college and his job at Kissick Construction who were like family. John loved well, and was well loved.

The Rosary and prayer service will begin at 5:00 pm, followed by visitation from 5:30-6:30 pm, on Thursday, August 5, at St. James Catholic Church, Liberty. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:00 am Friday, August 6, at St. James Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery.

John was a truly special person. His friendship, humor and positivity will forever be missed. I had the good fortune of being fraternity brothers with John while in college and fondly remember all of the good times that we had. John and I had so much in common (especially taste in music) and I loved getting updates from him and sharing what we were up to over the years. Sending along prayers to your family.

For 8 years I enjoyed being John's Project Administrator at Kissick. John was the reason I was hired, to help him with organization and processes. He kept so much information in his head and over the years got better at getting putting it out there for me to follow. John was a really good man. What you see is what you got. He was authentic with how he lived. He adored Jennifer and his kids. I got to watch them grow up through pictures and videos, he was so proud to be their Dad. He lived his faith and was not shy with explaining why he gave up sweets (or whatever he had decided that year) for Lent. He loved all his family, Mom, Dad, brothers, sister, in-laws, he always spoke so highly of everyone of them. He was a calming force that looked for the bright side of things. My favorite saying from John was "Cathy, we get paid the same to do even the unpleasant things, you just have to get through it." There is already a missing piece here at Kissick, we will miss John every day. I am so sorry for your loss.

I had the pleasure of working with John on several construction projects. He was a man of integrity and honor and someone I really looked up to. His character and sincerity has made a lasting impact on me and my life. He left a great legacy far beyond his own personal network of friends and family. I am so very sorry for your loss.
