Vertis Ambrose, age 96, passed away on October 14, 2020. He was born November 25, 1923 in Buffalo, Kansas to the late Albert and Clara Ambrose. He was married to the love of his life, Jean Bushfield, from April 22, 1945 until her death in 2006. He served in the United States Army Air Force during World War II and was a graduate of Benedict High School and the University of Kansas.
His career managing rural electric cooperatives moved the family to multiple locations including Wall, South Dakota, Fredericktown, Missouri and Savannah, Missouri until he joined CFC in 1975, which moved the family to their home in Longmont, Colorado. Vertis and Jean loved to spend time in (and view) the mountains, where many family memories were made and will forever be cherished.
Vertis was very involved in Lifebridge Christian Church, ham radio activities and volunteer work at Homestead Adult Day Care. He loved the out-of-doors (especially the mountains), trains, making others laugh and desserts (particularly ice cream and cookies). In his retirement before macular degeneration claimed his vision, he read every Louis L’Amour book that hit the shelf. Once Vertis and Jean moved to Kansas City in 2002, he became an avid sports fan, including the basketball team of his alma mater, KU, the KC Royals and, of course, the Chiefs. Above all, though, he loved his family. Vertis did not allow distance to be a roadblock to relationships and his family has peace knowing how very much he loved us.
Vertis is survived by their two sons: Neil (Gayle), Brett (Cathy), three grandchildren: Robyn Staggs (Jim), Matthew (Erica) and Elizabeth, three great-grandchildren: Alexander Staggs, Clint Staggs (Shannon) and Hailie Ambrose and two great-great granddaughters: Evalynn Staggs and Kennedy Staggs. He is also survived by brothers Cecil and Norman and sisters Arlene and Nadine along with several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Jean and brothers Albert, Wilbur, Eugene, Marvin and Don in addition to an infant sister Darlene.
Vertis’ love for others is the core of who he was. He once said if he had to do it all over again, he would make as much money as he could and give it to St. Jude Hospital. If you are so inclined, please make any memorial contributions to St. Jude in his honor.
