Ballard, Imogen B. “Pat”

Ballard, Imogen B. “Pat”

July 31, 1926 — November 14, 2021

Imogen Dean Billings Ballard, "Pat", 95, passed peacefully into her eternal home on November 14, 2021. She was surrounded in her final days by her three children at her residence at Bickford Place in Overland Park, KS.

A native of Tacoma, Washington, Pat was born July 31, 1926, the youngest of three children of Paul Whitman and Imogen Dean Billings. She often shared fond memories of growing up on the shores of Puget Sound.

Following high school graduation, Pat traveled back and forth by train to Lawrence, KS, to attend the University of Kansas, where she majored in Music and Voice. Pat became an accomplished soloist, and shared her remarkable talent at scores of Kansas City area events in the ensuing decades. She joined Pi Beta Phi sorority, a source of lifelong friendships, and was recently honored by Kansas City alumnae as a 75-year member.

At KU, Pat met John William "Jack" Ballard, Jr., who had just returned from World War II Allied-occupied Germany. Dazzled by his height, sense of humor and gentle demeanor, they began their 50+ years of marriage in 1947, settling in Prairie Village, KS, where they raised three children: John III, Paul and Jenny.

A longtime member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, Pat joyfully sang in the choir and as a soloist, and served as Altar Guild chair and a Eucharistic minister. She was a member of the Junior League of Kansas City. Pat loved golf and was four-time ladies' champion at Mission Hills Country Club. She devoured books in every spare moment and cheered on her beloved Jayhawk basketball team to the end.

Along with her parents, Pat was preceded in death by her husband Jack, sister Bobbie, and brother Bud. Survivors include her children and their spouses: John and Cindy Ballard of Overland Park, KS; Paul and Cindy Ballard of Austin, TX; and Jenny and Hank DeVry of Liberty, MO. She was "Grannie" to her adoring grandchildren, their spouses, and great grandchildren: Jake, Betsy, Will and Caroline Ballard; Erin, Mike, Kian and John Payne; Graham, Grace, Helena and Tillman Ballard; Brooks, Kelly, Maeve and Finley Ballard; Kate, Jordon, Parker, Aubree and Delaney Land; Claire DeVry and Henry DeVry.

Pat was my neighbor down the street at Huntington Farms. She and her dogs always made me smile. I remember her as neighborly and gracious. It was wonderful to learn so much than I ever knew about her from the story of her very well-lived life. Condolences to all who loved her.

John, Paul and Jenny. Your mom was a dear friend to my mother, Jane Smull. My most recent memory of them together was when they were both in rehab. Mom was being less than cooperative, but your mom was being positive, as I always remember her. Cherish the memories of a wonderful woman. Sarah Hatfield

John, Cindy and family. I'm so sorry to read of your Mother's passing, John. Wish I had met her, but I can tell from reading about her life that she was a special lady and a loving Mother, Grandmother, and friend. May your wonderful memories help you through your mourning and be with you forever.

I am so sorry for your loss. I have known your mom for so long. My first memories are of her singing at our house while my mom played the piano and of going to your house in PV before I even went to school. We all have taken joy in Pat's lovely voice and her incredible joy in life and love of family.

Holding on to great memories of golf games together and a woman always ready to share a larger-than-life laugh. Watching someone who was always just being herself was a great lesson for a young woman. It was a joy to be able to call your mom, and then you all, friends. She will be missed but we all can remember a life lived to the fullest! Sending big hugs as you grieve this loss yet celebrate her grand life. -Barbara Bollier

I am so sorry for your loss. Even though I never met Pat, I have heard what an amazing life she lead and what an awesome wife, mother, grandmother great grandmother and best friend to many, she will be deeply missed. My heart and prayers go out to her family and all that knew her.

John, Paul, and Jenny - your mother was a light inside my soul, especially after my mother passed nearly 50 years ago. Pat was her, and my, joy and comrade whose beautiful voice and sumptuous talent brightened so many of our days. I will never forget Pat's rendition of "He was despised" from "Messiah" that decorated so many of my Easters. She along with your Dad brought many smiles to my face. I hope your mourning will pass as quickly as possible in the sure and certain knowledge that Pat and Jack are reunited. Many blessings on you all. With much love and gratitude, Dan Tilson.

As more of "The Greatest Generation" leaves us, tonight Susie and I will toast the memory of two of its best. Mr. and Mrs. Ballard ( Jack and Pat) have a special place in my memory. Pat's strength and resilience, I suspect were on display till the very end. She was, in fact, a special lady. Let smiles, laughter and memories rule the coming days. The very best to the Ballard Family and the generations to come. Randy and Susie Davis

I was so sad to learn of Mrs. Ballards passing today. I used to pet sit her little dog , Dale, for several years. I'd enjoyed our many chats about Dale's care and sharing stories about our families. She was a grand lady and it was my privilege to know her. She so loved her family.

Dear John, Paul and Jenny, I was so sorry to learn about your mom’s death. I close my eyes and can still see our moms hanging around after choir practice laughing and having fun. I can see John and Paul being acolytes and me being so jealous that they wouldn’t let girls be acolytes. I remember when Jenny was born and hanging around your house for family gatherings. Your folks were always bigger than life and so fun. Funny how those long ago experiences are very clear in my mind and heart. I am so sorry for your loss. Your mom was truly one-of-kind. I am grateful I knew her and you all too. Sending my love and prayers to you and your families. Love, Mary Greaves Hodge
