March 31, 1947 — February 5, 2021

Proverbs 31 speaks of a virtuous woman. That was the portrait of Jeri. Jerlene was born March 31, 1947 to Cortez Boykin and Mary Field in Shreveport, Louisiana. She was one of three children.

She was united in marriage to Stephen Bate in 1987, later choosing to renew their vows on Valentine’s Day. Although having no children of their own together, Jeri embraced Stephen’s son, Matthew, as her own.

Jeri was a kind-hearted person with an infectious smile. Prayer, knowledge, and service to those less fortunate were the cornerstones of her life. She positively touched lives – mentoring, assisting, and encouraging others. Because of her caring personality, the field of nursing was her perfect calling. She served as a nurse at the VA Hospital for over 30 years.

God called Jeri to her heavenly home on February 5, 2021. She was preceded in death by both of her parents, Cortez and Mary Boykin. She leaves to mourn her passing, but to forever cherish her memory, her husband, Stephen Bate; her step-son, Matthew Bate; her sisters, Hazel Boykin and Carter-Maria Isaac; a hoot of cousins, other relatives, and friends.

Visitation will be 9-10:30AM, Tuesday, March 2 at Park Lawn Funeral Home, 8251 Hillcrest Rd. Private services and burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Carter and Hazel, God's ways are sometimes mysterious and we often don't understand what's going on but we trust Him, knowing that His way is perfect. Jeri was a special person to me. She had such a wonderful and quiet spirit that let me know that she was a lady but also was "one of the bunch!" Although I didn't see her as often as I saw the two of you, I was always glad to see her coming through the door with a smile on her face. She will be missed by you, of course, but your comfort comes in knowing that death is not the end. Those who die in Christ will live eternally. We have something to look forward to, don't we? Keep the memories of your beloved Jeri close and they will help you through this sorrowful time. The girls and I will continue to pray for you and the family. (Revelation 21:4) With much love, in Christ, The Cason Family
