Betty Moore McCoy, age 88, passed away peacefully on October 14, 2024. Betty was born on January 12, 1936, in Platte County, MO to Eugene Emmett Moore and Lydia Helen Arthur Moore. She graduated from Kearney High School in 1953. After high school, Betty worked a year for Farmers Insurance Co. in Kansas City before enrolling at Central Mo. Betty spent her early summer years riding her bike, swimming, and playing with dolls. Her favorite school subject when she was a teen was typing. Her least favorite was math. In 1958, Betty graduated from Central Missouri State Teachers College with a degree in Elementary Education. Betty also obtained her Master’s Degree in Reading from the University of Kansas City.
Betty married Ronald Ray McCoy, a postal carrier, in 1959. At the time, she was working for Raytown Public Schools as a fifth grade teacher. After moving to Liberty, MO, in 1960, Betty taught in Kearney Public Schools as a first grade teacher. Over the next two years, the couple had three children. She stayed at home for five years until all of her children were in school. Betty then taught in the Head Start program from 1968 to 1985. In 1986, she was hired to teach in Kansas City Public Schools for 23 years, retiring as a kindergarten teacher in 2009.
When Betty had her three children, "it was a dream come true." She had always wanted to be a mother and considered that time in her life to be her "Camelot" years. Betty loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandson wholeheartedly and enjoyed the many visits, trips, and adventures she had with them.
She is preceded in death by her father Eugene Emmett Moore and mother Lydia Helen Arthur Moore.
She is survived by her son Ronald E. McCoy, daughters Susan K. McCoy Lane and Sandy R. McCoy Crowl (William Crowl). She is also survived by her grandson Paul Thomas Lane (Shelby Varelman); granddaughter, Sarah Lydia Crowl Ahmad, husband Ahmad Ahmad; granddaughter, Laura Marie Crowl; and great-grandson Paul Hayes Lane.
Family and friends are all welcome to attend Betty's visitation on Saturday, October 26, at 10:00 AM, with the funeral service beginning at 11:00 AM, both at Park Lawn Northland Chapel in Liberty. Immediately following, Betty will be driven in procession for a graveside burial at Smithville Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Liberty United Methodist Church.
The family would like to thank the staff members of Liberty Hospital; Norterre of Liberty; and Addington Place of Kansas City for their undying patience, persistence, grit, and tenacity while caring for our mom.
