Block, Larry L.

July 29, 1942 — March 29, 2021

Pastor Larry LeRoy Block, 78, of Excelsior Springs, MO, gained Heaven on March 29, 2021.

Larry was born July 29, 1942, in Des Moines, IA, the second of four children of Gust and Vernita (Ackerman) Block. His parents and younger brother Jim preceded him in death.

Larry was saved at age five, baptized in the Holy Spirit at age seven, and began a seven decade ministry at age 14 playing the saxophone at old-fashioned tent revivals. Throughout his life, Larry was a talented musician, incorporating music with preaching the Gospel and traveled with many gospel groups through his college years.

With his dad serving in the ministry, Larry moved to California with his family where he graduated from Mount Miguel High School in Lemon Grove.

Following studies at Eugene Bible College in Eugene, OR, Larry began serving as a Youth Pastor in Seattle, WA. He pastored churches up and down the west coast and traveled ten years on the road across the US as an evangelist. He served as President of a Bible College in Des Moines, IA and pastored four years in Creston, IA. Larry pioneered Northside Assembly of God in Jefferson, IA and pastored there for nine years. His son Rod currently is Senior Pastor at Northside. Larry came to ES First in Excelsior Springs, MO in 1996, where he served as Senior Pastor until the time of his homegoing.

Larry was beloved and very active in the Excelsior Springs community. He was a Certified Firefighter and served as Chaplain for the Fire and Police Departments. Larry continued to serve as Excelsior Springs PD Chaplain until his passing. He loved golfing, fishing and was a licensed pilot.

On August 19, 1961, Larry was united in marriage to Carol Newby. His loving wife Carol preceded him in death in 1970.

On August 29, 1971, Larry was united in marriage to Nancy Joe Girdner. They would celebrate 50 years together this year. All in all, Larry's favorite thing to do was to spend lots of time with his beautiful wife Nancy Joe.

Along with Nancy Joe, Larry leaves his children, David Block (Kim), Rod Block (Jessica), Brandon Block, Jonathan Block (Jessica) and Allison Weedin (Ryan); grandchildren, Tylar (Heidi), McKenzie (Jeremy), Courtney, Jasmynn, Aaron (Makayla), Elijah, Mariah, Jadon, Reagan, Avarey, Judah, Isabella, Ireland, Creston, Kaci, Grace and Jolene; great grandsons, Jack and Zebulon; siblings, Beverly Lewis and Rick Block (Winona); spiritual son, Joshua Lester (Ashley); as well as nieces, nephews, other family members and friends too many to count.

Training young people and developing ministers was always a calling in Pastor Larry's life, evidenced by the multitude of individuals that point to him as a mentor. His legacy lives on through each of them.

Visitation will be held from 5-8 pm Monday, April 5, at Park Lawn Northland Chapel, 1640 North State Route 291, Liberty, MO. A service celebrating Larry's life will be held at noon Tuesday, April 6, at Northland Cathedral, 101 NW 99th Street, Kansas City, MO 64155. Burial will follow at Crown Hill Cemetery, Excelsior Springs.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Larry Block Memorial Fund at ES First Church in Excelsior Springs, and left at the funeral home, at the service or given at

I might pastor long ago in the 70's, when he was in Fremont Ca. he pushed me to be a better person and he gave me confidence in myself to do most anything. Thank you pastor for being a leader of our church and a friend to crazy kid of 12

Paul Coffey Rathert

Reverend Block has always been a kind heart and a friendly face in good times and difficult times. His genuine love of people carries on in the hearts of his family. Thoughts and prayers with Nancy Joe and the rest of the Block family.

I was the one that came kicking and screaming to ES First, not wanting g to leave my old church. But Pastor was quick to invite us, including the 2 teenage girls that were always with Tonnie, and our rambunctious little Jacob, to his home for many Sunday evening potlucks. He won me over. Since then Pastor has touched my life, my husband’s, my children’s and my parents’ in ways that have an eternal impact. I recently looked through my pictures and journals and could put my finger on so many amazing things that wouldn’t have happened without his influence. If I were to list them, they would fill and entire journal or two or three. I’m sure he’ll be carting armloads of crowns in heaven, maybe even balancing them in his head a mile high, with that big grin across his face. He taught me so much, but what I remember most is; Rejoice in the Lord always! No matter what it looks like in front of you, God is working for your good and it will be better than what you see. My life has been forever changed in a beautiful way and I am eternally grateful. I love you all so very much! I am praying for you.

We are all better for knowing him. As I read the condolences I'm thinking, it all is so true. That big smile is for heaven now. Lord continue to bless and comfort ES First and pastor's family.

To know Pastor Block was to love him. There is not enough space or time to share all that he was to us. He will be missed, but we will be reunited some day soon. If anyone ever heard the words “Well done good and faithful servant” I’m sure he did.

Pastor Larry led so many people to God. His smile always penetrated with a deep message behind. We were so blessed to have him officiate our wedding last year. The only real loss is that his work here was finished and he will be missed by us. Our hearts go out to Nancy and the Block family who will miss his daily charm.

Kevin & Tamara Shaw

Any words I could say would fall short of expressing how Pastor cared for our church and community. He was a true Shepherd. Love to all the Block family.

When I heard that Pastor has passed, I was stunned. Pastor was so easy to talk to and work with. I'm glad he passed on so much talent to the rest of the family. One of the best memories of his music playing was when Nancy Joe talked him into playing his saxophone. Man could he play. But I didn't see any musical instrument that he couldn't play and was a master at it. And there was the Airplane ride. I was mowing grass and used that for an excuse to not go. ( I had never been in a plane before) He said, The grass will be here when we get back. I loved the flight. Thank you Pastor Block.

Jesse Johnston

Our condolences to his family. Reflecting back on conventions that we shared back in the 1970s. Larry was a great guy!

Rev. Jeff Becker

I initially met Pastor Larry sometime around 2005 while I was itinerating for the mission field in Colombia, South America. Several years later, while home again itinerating, I met with him for lunch and a tour of the town which led to visiting the Police and Fire department. I remember him sharing that he had become a chaplain, and how this had opened up so many new opportunities for him to step into the lives of the officers, firefighters, and even those in the town. As he spoke, I could tell that beside being a pastor, being a chaplain was a real passion of his as he served his community with the hope of reaching the spiritually lost. So, I say, "thank you, Chaplain Larry for honorably wearing the "chaplain's badge" that allowed you to love, care for, and bless those around you and the community that you served. Your example marches on!

It is hard to find words to express what a great Man of God Larry Block was. Even more so to describe the treasure of having Larry Block as a friend. Without question his beautiful legacy will be carried on by his children. It is hard to celebrate through the sorrow but we know that is what you would want. Thoughts and prayers for the family.

We are so very sorry for your loss. Pastor Block was always so very kind to us. ES First is held close to heart as this was where Terri went to church riding the bus. She was saved at this church at the age of six in primary Sunday school class. We are so very appreciative of the pastoral team, ministries and believers at ES First. You are in our prayers as you say your temporary goodbyes to Pastor Block. He has gone a little ahead of us and is cheering us forward and the heavenly race towards home. With love and prayers.

Crescent Lake has heard me say this from the pulpit several times over the years- every conversation I ever had with Pastor Block since I moved here in late 1998 he tried to encourage me. I will miss his encouragement. My deepest condolences to the family - especially his wife and my young friend Brandon. The foundation he has laid at E.S.First and other places through those he has helped train will continue to live on!
