Stephen and I were on a project team as part of leadership training a few years ago. It was a long two weeks of 12+ hour days but Stephen always made it a fun and upbeat time. Even in a hand selected group of leaders he stood out. I didn't know him as well as people who worked with him every day but it still hit me hard when I saw the news. He was such a great, positive person and we are all going to miss him. My condolences to his family and friends.

Alex Wassman, MoDOT

I didn’t get an opportunity to spend much time getting to know Stephen, but he was kind, courteous, and a pleasure to just say hello to as I passed him at work. The world shines a little less bright without this amazing person in it. Prayers for comfort to all who loved him.

My condolences and prayers to the Butler family. We are thinking of you and wishing you hope in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. If there is anything, I can do to help during this time don’t hesitate to ask. Steve will truly be missed. I had Steve on speed dial, and he had me on speed dial. I enjoyed working with Steve. He would come to my office every Monday afternoon to get my Sunday leftovers. When I went on a diet, Steve said, “I’m not on a diet.” I’m sure going to miss that laugh. Steve will always be in our hearts and memories.

I had the privilege of working with Steve on many occasions over the years. I don't think he knew a stranger and could always put a smile on your face. He loved talking about his boys, football and MoDOT. He was always a team player and had a great attitude. I will truly miss his smile and conversations. Prayers for his boys and family during this difficult time. May the Lord provide you peace and comfort in the days ahead as you grieve the loss of this wonderful man. God speed, Steve.
