J. R. “Jay” Cantrell

October 13, 1924 — August 27, 2018

J. R. "Jay" Cantrell, 93, a longtime Liberty resident, passed away peacefully at his home on August 27, 2018. He was born October 13, 1924, in Quay, OK, one of 11 children of John Russell and Alta (McGee) Cantrell.

Jay served in the Rainbow Division of the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a tool and die maker for many years, retiring from IMCO. Jay served as Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 372 in Liberty for ten years and became Honorary Warrior Silent Spotted Horse in the Tribe of Mic-O-Say in 1962. He served on the Board of Directors of the Liberty Parks and Recreation Department and was a Liberty Little League Baseball coach. Jay was also a 58 year member of the Liberty Lions Club.

Along with his parents, Jay was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Julie (Williams) Cantrell, and seven siblings. He leaves his children, Judith Zahnd (James) and Stephen Jay Cantrell (Suzzann); grandchildren, Jennifer Timmis (Jon) and Spencer Jay Cantrell; great grandsons, Jack, Charlie and William Timmis; siblings, June Callahan (Jerry), Calvin Cantrell and Charles Cantrell (Barbara); as well as other family members and many friends.

A memorial service celebrating Jay's life will be held from noon until 4:00 pm on Saturday, October 13, at 9707 N.W. 77th Terrace, Weatherby Lake, MO 64152. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Lions Club International Foundation (LCIF) in memory of Lion Jay Cantrell, Dept 4547, Carol Stream, IL 60122-4547.
