Carol Denny Curtis, 86, of Lenexa, KS, passed away on June 22, 2019. Carol was born September 4, 1932 in Kansas City, Missouri, the daughter of Karel Willem Booy and Margaret Freyman. Carol served in the Air Force from 1951-1955 and taught radio mechanics.
After Carol’s time in the Air Force, she worked for two years at Bendix and married Raymond O. Denny in 1957. They were married for 27 years and together they had three children. After her husband passed in 1984, she married Alan L. Curtis and shared their 25 th wedding anniversary before he passed in 2011.
In addition to her husbands, Carol was also preceded in death by her mother, Margaret Freyman, in 1948; her brother, William T. Booy, in 1958; her father, Karel Booy, in 1987 and her daughter, Margaret Denny, in 2017.
Carol leaves her brother, Richard R. Booy and wife, Grace, of Libertyville, Illinois; son, Raymond H. Denny, of Lenexa; daughter, Dorothy Denny, and her husband, Kevin, of Overland Park; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Carol was very talented at needlework. She sewed many clothes (for her children and her daughters’ dolls) and did a lot of needlepoint and embroidery in the 1970s and 1980s. A life-long learner, she continued to expand her knowledge and took up cross-stitching and then quilting. Quilting became her passion. She completed many beautiful small quilts and several full size quilts, too.
Due to low vision, she had to stop quilting, but she was able to continue her life-long passion of reading. She listened to more than 500 books in 6 years through the Kansas Talking Books Service (via Library of Congress). She also thoroughly enjoyed living in her Independent Living apartment at Westchester Village in Lenexa the past 5 and a half years. She enjoyed the daily lunchroom and socializing with the other residents. She participated in the Bible study class on Wednesdays led by Chaplain Jim Miller. Special thanks to the staff at Westchester Village – especially the lunchroom: Lisa, Moe, Yar, Amy, Courtney, Andrea and all of the other kind culinary staff. Very special thanks to her Phoenix home health aides who assisted her twice a day in the last two years and allowed her to remain in her apartment and live with dignity; Janesha Burgin, Silvina Guerrero, Daisa Smith and Kevin Lemanske.
