Amidst the celebration of our Nation’s Independence Day, the world lost a beacon of grace and creativity as Donna Elaine Root passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully at her home in Liberty, Missouri. Born on July 25, 1935, in the heart of Liberty, she graced this world with her presence for 88 years before departing on July 4, 2024.
Donna's life was a tapestry with threads of love, dedication and creativity. A graduate of Liberty High School, she pursued her passion for English by earning a Bachelor's degree from William Jewel. Despite spending most of her days as a devoted homemaker to her two beloved children, Jon Darren Root and Valerie (Tom) Ratterman, she began to explore the world around her, both past and present. She volunteered at the Clay County Archives learning the history of her hometown, delving into her family genealogy and assisting others in discovering their own family stories. In Donna’s zest for life she explored the world beyond the pages of the history books. In true fashion, she bravely traveled internationally, with one of her most notable memories being the time she got lost in Russia; she ended up waiting with the police until they were able to reunite her with her tour group.
A meticulous and artistic soul, Donna approached life with an exceptional attention to detail. Her organizational skills were legendary, matched only by her creativity and passion for arts and crafts. She lovingly created 'Donna's Dolls' handcrafting each doll with precision - from embroidered faces to meticulously sewn clothing tailored to specific time periods. Sewing, crocheting, knitting - she could do it all. Her daughter Valerie fondly remembers wearing her Mom’s own clothing creations, even calling them "cool"!
Beyond her crafting talents, Donna expressed her love through cooking and baking. She had a warm heart and an insatiable desire to ensure everyone around her was well-fed and content. No one left Donna's home without a full belly and cherished memories of shared meals. Donna's strength of will was unwavering, yet she held a private demeanor that only added to her enigmatic charm. To those who knew her best, she was a pillar of support and kindness.
In the hearts of those who survive her are her son Jon Darren Root and daughter Valerie (Tom) Ratterman, in which Donna's legacy will forever endure. Also left behind are her sisters Carolyn Thomas and Linda Galloway; grandchildren Bailey (Chris) Jensen, TJ Ratterman, Meghan Ratterman, Emma Ratterman, Erin Ratterman; great grandchildren Lily, Claire, and Gwendolyn. She now reunites with her parents Clay and Elaine Bailey in eternal peace.
A Visitation for family and friends will be held from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM before her 12:00 PM Memorial Service; both at Liberty Christian Church on Saturday, July 13, 2024. Immediately following, Donna's ashes will be taken by her son and daughter to Glenridge Cemetery for a Committal Service at 1:30 PM. All are welcome to join this celebration of Donna's life - 88 years well lived and deeply cherished.
As we bid farewell to Donna Root, let us carry forward the values she imparted - love fiercely, create passionately and cherish every detail that makes life beautiful. In our memories and hearts, Donna's light will continue to shine brightly.
