Edward Lee Michaelis, age 86, of Pleasant Valley passed away peacefully at home on Friday, May 24, 2024. Edward was born on June 24, 1937, in McFarland, Kansas, son of Joseph B. and Mary Eunice Hastings Michaelis. He attended elementary school in McFarland and graduated from Paxico High School where he enjoyed playing basketball and baseball. He then went on to serve his country for four years in the United States Marine Corps.
Edward married Joann G. Kolde in 1959. After moving to Kansas City, he began working for AT&T as a lineman for 9 years, then a cable splicer for 31 years. He retired from AT&T after 40 years and then enjoyed working with his son on the farm and hay baling for 20 years.
During his retirement years, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, traveling, taking his jet ski to the lake, fishing, gardening, and coaching the Chiefs, Royals, and K-State from his lazy boy chair.
He was a member of St James Catholic Church, Pioneers, CWA local 6333 union, and served on the Pleasant Valley water board for over 20 years.
Edward is survived by his wife of 64 years and his children, Daniel Michaelis (Diane), Holt, Christopher Michaelis (Jennifer), Kearney, Brenda Hobbs (Clifford), Trimble, and Andrew Michaelis (Elizabeth), Kansas City; grandchildren, Elizabeth, Jessica, Bryan, Lauren, Emily, Michelle, Matthew, and Genevieve; great-grandchildren, John, Colt, and Daniel; his siblings, Virginia Glotzbach (Bill), Paxico, and Carol Gasperich (Louis), McFarland; and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings; Margaret Farrell, Lilia McCubbin, Mary Ellen Fulmer, Juanita Coon, Frank Michaelis, Wilfred Michaelis, Olive Glotzbach, Richard Michaelis, and infant brothers.
Visitation will begin at 10:00 am, followed by the Rosary at 10:45 am and Mass of Christian burial at 11:00 am, on Wednesday, May 29, at St. James Catholic Church, Liberty, MO. Graveside services will be held at 3:00 pm Wednesday, May 29, at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Newbury, KS. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to St. James Catholic Church, 309 South Stewart Road, Liberty, MO 64068.
