Lawrence J. Haake, 92, of Overland Park, KS passed away Saturday, August 24th. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Tuesday, August 27th at 11:30 at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 8311 W. 93rd St., Overland Park, Kansas 66212. Visitation at the church one hour prior to the service. Burial at Calvary Cemetery in Kansas City, MO.
Larry was born July 22, 1927 in Kansas City, MO to Joseph and Marguerite Haake. He served honorably in the U.S. Army from 1945-1947. After completing his service, he returned to Bishop Lillis High School and graduated in 1948. Post high school, Larry attended the Kansas City Art Institute. In April of 1951, Larry married a young woman he met at a USO dance, Peggy Lou Quaiatto and they were lovingly married for 64 years until Peggy’s death in May 2015.
Larry was a machinist by trade but an artist by avocation. He painted and sculpted, did photography and wood carving. He designed and built many wood pieces for his family and friends. These pieces included everything from cradles, desks, chairs, and bookshelves, to birdhouses and wonderfully creative paper towel racks.
Larry was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy, his parents, Joseph and Marguerite and his 5 older brothers, Tom, Don, Arnie, Joe, and Wally. He is survived by his 6 children: Larry (Marie), David (Elaine), Mary (Jim D’Antuono), Diane (Bill Pearce), Mark, and Mike (Diana). Larry is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
