Erma Lucille Hayes

September 16, 1929 — September 7, 2020

Erma Lucille Hayes, 90, of Kansas City, MO, passed away peacefully on September 7, 2020.

Graveside services will be at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 26th at Greenmoore Memorial Gardens, Barnett, MO.

Erma was born on September 16, 1929, in Barnett, Mo. She was the first born child of 10 to Louis and Bernice Hicks of Barnett. Erma spent her adolescent years in Barnett, Mo., attending Eldon High School until she married the love of her life Harold E. Hayes on December 7, 1946. Harold and Erma lived their life as a married couple in Barnett and welcomed their first child, Ronald W. Hayes, in May of 1948. The family continued to grow as they welcomed their second child, Pamela S. Hayes, in August of 1952 in Harrisonville, MO. In 1954 they made the move to Independence MO with Harold's job and Erma was blessed to be a full-time homemaker to her young children. In fall of 1956 the family welcomed their final child Dennis K. Hayes.

The family lived in Independence for the next 34 years while their children grew and became adults and started families of their own. They attended Central Assembly of God from 1960-1988 where Erma was involved with Children’s Church and did many activities with the women's ministries. Erma also loved and enjoyed making floral arrangements for church events and many weddings of those she loved. In 1988 Harold and Erma decided to retire and move to Hermitage Mo. They spent many years camping, fishing and attending Bluegrass Festivals with her family and friends. While in Hermitage they attended Hermitage Assembly of God from 1988-1999 where she continued to work in the Children’s ministry. In 1999 they started attending Galmey Community Bible Church where they stayed active until 2008 when the hard decision was made to return to Kansas City, MO. Once returning to Kansas City, Harold and Erma enjoyed spending time with their new church family at Abundant Life KC, their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Erma took care of Harold until he passed away on July 3, 2012. After Harold's passing Erma continued to spend time with her family as much as she could. She would look forward to her weekly Friday outings to get her hair done, go to Walmart and have lunch with her sons and grandkids. Erma loved to minister the Good Lord's word to anyone and everyone who would listen. She didn’t know a stranger and was loved and cherished by so many.

Erma is preceded in death by her parents Louis and Bernice, five brothers (Louis Jr., Paul, Clarence, Luther and Donald), a sister Clara (Stark) and her husband of 64 years Harold E. Hayes.

Erma is survived by brothers, Glen Hicks and wife Pat of Eldon, Mo., Leon Hicks and wife Sue of Jefferson City, Mo., and Herb Hicks and wife Peggy of Burlington, Ky; three children Ronald and Teresa Hayes of Kansas City, Pamela and Charles Hensley of Kansas City, Dennis and Rhonda Hayes of Blue Springs; six grandchildren, Chris (Rhonda), Nicole (Mark), Chad, Tiffany (Levi), Dena and Jennifer (Sean) 11 great grandchildren, Lexus, Devin, Elaina, Amelia, Brooklyn, Brecken, Ella, Ruby, Parker, Lukas and Leo; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to The Alzheimer's Association in Harold’s name.

Psalm 89:15, "Blessed are they who hear the joyful blast of the trumpet. For they shall walk in the light of your presence." Psalm 116:15, "Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his faithful servants." Erma was certainly that.
