Harlyn E. Helander

January 16, 1939 — February 25, 2020

Harlyn Eugene (Gene) Helander, age 81, beloved husband, father and grandfather, entered eternal rest to be with his savior February 25, 2020, surrounded by family and loved ones at Mercy Hospital in Oklahoma City.

Gene was born in Delong, IL on January 16, 1939. He was one of 5 children. He served our great country by enlisting in the Airforce. During that time, he met and married his best friend, soul mate and lifelong partner of 59 years, Ruth Helander. They married in Kansas City, MO in 1960.

Gene and Ruth were active in many Lutheran Churches around the country. They lived in numerous states meeting life-long friends while Gene perused his career in Manufacturing & Avionics. He held a bachelor’s in applied arts and Sciences. Being adventurous as he was, he loved hiking in the Colorado mountains viewing all the wildlife. Gene enjoyed family vacations and spending time with his two grandchildren.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents Harry and Eva Helander; brother Harold Helander; and sisters Hollis Lambert and Helen Runblad. Survivors include his sister Hazel Fisher; wife Ruth Helander; daughter Ronda Helander-Moore and her husband Gary Moore; and grandchildren Ryan and Tiffany Moore.

Graveside services will be held at 1PM, Saturday, March 7 at Memorial Park Cemetery, located at Park Lawn Funeral Home, 8251 Hillcrest Rd., Kansas City, MO.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of choice.
