Houk, Esther Naomi

Houk, Esther Naomi

January 21, 1935 — June 3, 2022

Esther Naomi Houk, age 87, passed away June 3, 2022, in Kansas City, Missouri. Naomi was born on January 21, 1935, in Goodrich, Kansas, to Maurice Grant Richardson and Velma Lucille Brownback Richardson.

As a child, she and her parents lived in both Kansas and Missouri, with one year spent in Winona, Minnesota, before settling in Raytown, MO. She was a graduate of Raytown High School, class of 1952.

Naomi was married to Paul Warren Houk, on December 29, 1956. They made their home in Raytown, MO for all their 64 years of marriage where they raised their four children. She was a member of the Connection Point Church in Raytown, MO.

Naomi was a homemaker and worked for 20 years as the Nursery Coordinator at First Baptist Church of Raytown. She devoted her life to her family and home. It was a lively household and she ushered everyone to church, to band concerts, to sporting events, and girl scouts and boy scouts.

Naomi enjoyed bowling, gardening, scrapbooking, and reading. After she and her husband retired, they spent time traveling and camping in warmer climates, attending NASCAR races, and enjoying special events like the Gospel Music Festival in Osage Beach, MO each year. Another fun pastime for Naomi was sports. She loved baseball, football, and college basketball.

Naomi will most be remembered for her steadfast faith, her love for her family, and for the friendships she cherished. Her optimism and positive outlook were her trademarks. She touched the lives of people by the cards she sent, the prayers she prayed, her kind words and encouragement, and the love of God which showed in all she did.

She often said that she had lived a blessed life. Blessed with a marriage of 64 years and a wonderful family. She also reminded us that if the Lord was calling her home, she was at peace with it because she knew where she was going. Naomi made the world a more beautiful place and she is eternally loved and missed by those who knew her.

Naomi is survived by her children: Ken Houk of Fruitport, MI; Linda Myers (Randy) of Kansas City, MO; Sandy Clements (Bob) of Liberty, MO; and Donnie (Sherry) Houk of Liberty, MO; Sister, Cheryl (Richard) McKenzie of Belton, MO; Nephews and Nieces: Jack Johnson (Barb) of Lincoln, MO, Cheryl (Dwayne) Weinberg, of Cole Camp, MO, Danny Johnson of Lincoln, MO and Kim Hernandez of Raymore, MO. She is also survived by 7 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

She is proceeded in death by Husband Paul Houk, Grandson Tanner Kapp, Nephew Scott McKenzie and Parents Maurice and Lucille Richardson.

Jennifer, Katherine and myself were saddened to hear the news of Naomi's passing. Our thoughts and prayers are going out for the entire family for the strength to heal in this sad time. Paul and Naomi were so welcoming to Katherine and I, treating us with their time, knowledge, history, home, and family. It was a treat to travel with them and Rolla to family homes, towns, cemeteries and stopping to brake bread together. They made a great impression on Katherine on the importance of family. It is helpful to know they are together in grace and peace.

I was sorry to hear of your dear mother's passing. Your father and mother were very kind to our family. I met them both for the first time at my Mothers funeral and then at my Dads ~ Rolla Houk. I believe they were 1st cousins. I couldn't believe how spry and energetic they both were. I liked them both immediately. May the Lord console your family in this trying time and bless all of you. Sincerely ~ Pam Houk-Twenter

Naomi & Paul were truly like family to me for many years, thanks to our connection thru one of my best friends, Sandy (their beautiful daughter). I will treasure all of my sweet memories with both of them. I so enjoyed my recent visits with Naomi, sharing fun family stories, craft projects and recipes, as well as baking for her. I miss her already, but I know she’s happy in heaven reunited with her loving husband.

We always looked forward to visiting the Houk family on our Missouri trips. They were family to my Mom and in turn to us all. So many fun stories to hear, boating adventures to go on at the lake, laughter to share, and always welcoming smiles. Absolutely another Uncle and Aunt for me. Every time I flew back, they came to visit me. Naomi was loved by all and will be greatly missed. ❤️

I was so sorry to hear about your mom! We had some great times babysitting together at church! She was such a wonderful friend and boss! I understand, all too well, your loss….I’m learning all we can do is walk through it, knowing we will see our parents again. Good news, God promises to walk with us through it all.
