Janet “Kay” Chrane, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend passed away surrounded by her loving family on March 15, 2025, in Liberty, Missouri. Born on November 5, 1937, in Richmond, Missouri, Kay was the youngest of five children raised by her parents, Norman and Eleanor Hurst.
Her love story with Frank began on the softball field, where he coached her before becoming her devoted husband. Their 48 years together were filled with love and adventure. Whether they were camping near the mountains, boating at Table Rock and Smithville Lake, or enjoying each other's company, their relationship was a testament to true partnership and joy.
Family was the most important part of Kay’s life. She was a loving mother to her son, Steve Hook, and proud “Mema” to Courtney Ross (husband Jay) and Christy Turner (husband Lee). She adored her great-grandson, Oliver Ross, and loved making memories with him – usually in the yard to enjoy his energy and spirit.
Kay dedicated more than 40 years working for Clay County, Missouri, where she retired as the Chief Deputy Juvenile Officer. Her mentorship working at the juvenile office produced not only a hardworking and cohesive team, but individuals who went on to be FBI agents, DEA agents, and a deputy Chief for the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department. Her compassion and dedication to her role touched the lives of many.
Kay had a great sense of humor and could always make people laugh. She made friends easily and had a way of making everyone feel welcome. Kind, compassionate, and ever ready to share a joke, Kay thrived on making people smile and kept the atmosphere light wherever she roamed.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Norman and Eleanor Hurst; siblings, Eileen, Bill, Madge and Dixie, and her nephew Billy Hurst. She is survived by her cherished nephews and nieces; Delores Aguilar, Lisa Blatti, Nora Buckles, Reggie Hamilton, Carolyn Mayo, Charles Murray, Terry Norris, Paul Smith, Norman Smith, their children, as well as her brother-in-law Bill Chrane and sister-in-law Jeanette Chrane.
Kay will be laid to rest privately at Glenridge Cemetery by her family. The family appreciates all the love and support as they honor her memory and hope to celebrate her incredible life more broadly in the Spring. Memorial contributions can be made to the SPCA in Kay’s memory.
Kay’s legacy is one of love, family, grace, and laughter. She will always be remembered for the joy she brought to others. Rest easy, Mema. This isn’t goodbye, it’s see ya later - you will never be forgotten.
