Jerry Cooke

July 15, 1940 — December 28, 2024

Jerry was as unforgettable as his voice. He sang in nightclubs throughout his life and was as comfortable singing in a jazz trio as in an R&B or blues band. He and his wife, Susan, shared five decades, a testament to their love and partnership. Their home was a place of music, laughter, and unwavering support. Together, they raised Susan’s son, John Socha, who Jerry loved as his own. Jerry was John's biggest supporter and fan throughout his life.

As a grandfather, Jerry's love extended to John’s three daughters, Taylor, Julianna, and Jessica Socha. Taylor at 27, and the twins Julianna and Jessica at 25, grew up with the sound of their grandfather's voice. Jerry's presence in their lives was a blend of wisdom, warmth, and singing, leaving an indelible mark on each of them.

Jerry's life was deeply rooted in the values and lessons imparted by his grandparents. Born and raised in Cape Girardeau, Missouri: his formative years were shaped by his grandparents. His grandmother, an exceptionally talented singer, introduced him to the world of music and Christianity through their church. His grandfather, a hardworking sharecropper, imparted a different kind of wisdom. Through the long days spent driving a team of mules, Jerry learned the value of perseverance and inherited a deep affection for horses and dogs.

His legacy is carried forward not only in the songs he sang but in the hearts of those who loved him. His story is one of resilience, passion, and an unwavering dedication to those he loved and his music. Though he is now silent, the echoes of Jerry’s singing will resonate forever in the memories of all who had the privilege of hearing him sing.

Despite Alzheimer's, he recognized Susan and expressed his love to the end. He passed away peacefully at home. Jerry is survived by his wife, Susan K. Cook, his stepson, John D. Socha, his 3 granddaughters, Taylor, Julianna & Jessica Socha, great granddaughter, Piper Jean Padgett, his stepbrothers, I.C. Porter Jr., Cedric Porter and stepsister, Deeshaun Rice.
