JOHN “JACK” COUGHLIN
John William “Jack” Coughlin, 73, of Liberty, MO, joined his Lord and Savior on March 24, 2024. He passed peacefully at home surrounded by family and friends.
Jack was born March 16, 1951, in Kansas City, MO, the son of John Paul Coughlin and Elizabeth “Betty” Buckner Coughlin. Along with his parents, Jack was preceded in death by a brother, Vaughn Nevins.
Jack graduated from St. Joseph Catholic High School in Shawnee, KS and received his bachelor’s degree from Avila College. He co-owned and operated Mid-America Contractors, Inc. with his wife, Marilyn, for 27 years before he retired in 2015.
Jack was an avid hunter, fisherman, golfer, and member of Napier Hunt Club, where he proudly welcomed members of the Wounded Warrior Project from throughout the US at an annual retreat. He was a member of Bethany Fellowship in Liberty, the North Kansas City Business Council, and North Kansas City Breakfast Club.
Jack was united in marriage to Marilyn Ann (Shea) McDowell on July 28, 1996. Along with Marilyn, Jack leaves his children, Erin Gill (Brian) of Olathe, KS, and Shannon Coughlin (Becca Bellush) of Rochester, NY, (both from his prior marriage to Susan Coughlin) and Jason McDowell (Jenny) of Liberty, MO; grandchildren, Ayden, Jack, and Ethan Gill, Genevieve and Edith Coughlin, Kiana, Hailey, and Marcus McDowell; siblings, Joan Clark, Terry Lynch, Paul Coughlin (Terri), Ann Rock (Keith), and Phil Coughlin; as well as many nieces, nephews, other family members, friends, his loyal hunting dogs, Mac and Kyla, and the ever-elusive Kevin (origin unknown).
Jack will be remembered for his pranks and sense of humor, his creativity in design, constantly thinking up new projects and “improvements” on old ones, his generosity, and his ability to communicate with just his eyes by giving the infamous “look.”
