Sylvia Kirkland

Sylvia Kirkland, age 83, died May 4, 2019. Visitation will be held Monday, May 13 at 9:30am, followed by Funeral Mass at 10am, at St. Regis Catholic Church, 8941 James A. Reed Rd., Kansas City, MO 64138. Burial at Green Lawn Cemetery.

Sylvia moved from New York to Kansas City in 1957 to marry Roland J. Kirkland. Summer weekends were often spent as a family camping and visiting local areas and states.  Together they raised three children until he passed in 1993.

Sylvia was active in church attending St. Regis Catholic Church in Raytown Mo. She was also very active in Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts for many years. She enjoyed being the Boy Scout troop den mother and Girl Scout troop leader. Crafting and sewing were regular events in her house.  She went back to college in 1985 to get her Associates Degree and also worked for the IRS for a few years. She loved getting out and about at any chance. Summers were spent at the Theater in the Park with her grand kids. Always spunky and determined even into her older years, she worked in the yard and played with the grand kids. Even at 80 she was still wielding a chain saw to trim her trees.

Survivors include her children: Bob Kirkland, Sherrie Ortiz and Theresa Ailshire; brother, Bill Twomey; grandchildren: Dalton Kirkland, Juliana Ortiz, Victor Ortiz, Ashley Ailshire, Jolene Ailshire and great granddaughter, Destiny Ailshire.

Sylvia was preceded in death by her husband, Roland, and 7 siblings.

Sylvia will be greatly missed. She was always a cheerleader to anyone she met, even when they did not want to hear it.
