Julia Murphy Werkowitch Knipper, 91, of Merriam, Kansas, was reunited with her loved ones in heaven on February 4, 2023. She passed peacefully at home. She was born May 23, 1931, to Joseph and Margaret Donahue Murphy. She attended Redemptorist Schools and was a member of the sorority there. On April 15, 1950, Julia married Paul Werkowitch, with whom she shared five children. After Paul passed away, Julia married Joe Knipper, joining her family of six with his family of seven.
Julia was proud of her family and her Irish heritage, and served as an inspiration to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren for her generosity, her loving spirit, and her warm welcome to all who met her. She enjoyed working, and contributed her talents to Robinson’s Shoes and Fowler Envelope in her earlier years. Later, she and Joe owned and operated a hardware store together and she started her own cleaning business, employing and mentoring many of her relatives along the way.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Paul Werkowitch, her husband Joe Knipper, her brothers Joe, Pat, Jimmy, Mike, and Jerry, her sisters Cissy, Rosie, Kate, and Helen, and her children Jimmy Knipper and Theresa Ebel (Bill), her grandson Ryan Blades, her granddaughter Susan Murphy and her great grandson James August Sharkey. She is survived by her children Susan Werkowitch, Paul (Ann) Werkowitch, Jane Maas (Frank), Peter (Sarah) Werkowitch, Ellen Werkowitch, Peter (Joanie) Knipper, Anne Knipper, John Knipper, and Beth Loecken (Jay). She is also survived by her sisters Dodie, Rita, Brigid, Cookie, and by Lesa Mense (Greg) and Flora Stump, as well as by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation will begin at 1:00 pm on Friday, February 10, 2023, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 3333 Broadway, Kansas City, Missouri, with the Mass of the Resurrection beginning at 2:00 pm. Inurnment will be at Forest Hill and Calvary Cemetery in a private service at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Kansas City Hospice and Palliative Care.
