LARRY EUGENE SMITH, 76, of Bates City, Missouri, passed away unexpectedly on June 12, 2024, at his home.

 Larry was born November 26, 1947, in Newport, Arkansas. He graduated from Olathe (KS) High School. Larry served in the US Army during the Vietnam era, receiving honorable discharge in 1969. He later received his Associate’s degree from Johnson County Community College, graduated from the FBI Academy, and recently became and ordained minister.

 Larry’s storied career in law enforcement spanned the better part of four decades. He served 30 years on the Johnson County, Kansas Sheriff’s Department, retiring as Undersheriff in 2003. He would later serve twice as interim Chief of Police for the Raymore, Missouri Police Department. 

 Along with his parents, Larry was preceded in death by his son, Travis Smith. He leaves his wife Terri Smith; daughter, Stacey Tamasi and her partner Armando; Terri’s children, Tiffany Meyer and Chad Meyer, Chad’s wife Arika, and their daughters, Javin, Zyla, and Ela. Larry also leaves his sister, Julie West and her husband Buddy; half-brother, Paul Smith and his wife Cathy; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other extended family members and many friends.

 Graveside services will be held at 2:00 pm Friday, June 14, at Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens, 13901 South Black Bob Road, Olathe, Kansas 66062. 

 Memorial contributions are suggested in Larry’s name to the Johnson County, Kansas Sheriff’s Charitable Assistance Foundation (jcsocharity.org)
