Lena Yvonne Rosser was born in Dallas, Texas on January 2, 1929. She lived in Kansas City, Missouri all her life. She left this world on May 26, 2023.
Lena married Bill Rosser on August 18, 1948 and they were married for over 60 years. Lena’s goal in life was to be a teacher. She achieved her goal when she graduated from UMKC at age 37 with a degree in Elementary Education. The year was 1968, at a time when it was not common for “older” adults to be college students. Lena taught in the Kansas City Missouri School District for many years. She was a dedicated, hard-working teacher and she touched many lives. Helping students progress academically was her priority, along with encouraging students to become good citizens and productive members of society.
Lena was a very active person. She was one of the first girl students at Central High School to earn a letter of outstanding participation in school sports. Throughout her adult life, exercise and keeping in shape was important to her. Some of the activities included tennis, ice skating, swimming and long walks.
Bill and Lena loved to travel. During their marriage, they visited over 20 countries.
Lena studied Spanish throughout her life and encouraged her daughters to be bilingual. Lena and Bill taught English as a second language to adults for many years. They also served as interpreters on trips with Christian Medical Society to Honduras several times.
Lena was a Jewish Christian. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church for most of her life.
Lena was preceded in death by her husband Bill, daughter Melinda, brother “Sonny”, stepsister Olivia, son in law Kevin, mother Liz and father Charles. She is survived by her daughter Annette, as well as grandchildren and great grandchildren. Spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren brought her great joy.
A memorial service will be held 1PM, Saturday, August 5, 2023 at Park Lawn Funeral Home, 8251 Hillcrest Rd., Kansas City, Missouri. Private burial in Memorial Park Cemetery.
