Merdis’s extraordinary life began 105 years ago. Merdis was born to: Preston and Martha Figures on February 12, 1919, in Okmulgee, OK. She was one of twelve children born into the Figures family. She was affectionately known as “Sugar”. Very young in Merdis’s life, she accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior. This was the foundation on which she built her life. Merdis was a loving mother to one child, a caring grandmother to nine grandchildren, and countless great grandchildren.
Merdis was a 4th generation grandmother. Everyone felt Granny’s love. Armed only with her faith, Merdis was a great provider for her family. Her work endeavors included: Silk Presser, Seamstress, Nurse’s Aide and Caregiver. Merdis owned and operated a deli, a thrift store and a boarding home for seniors. Merdis’s hobbies were also resourceful, she sold handmade quilts, and an amazing 7 flavor poundcake. Merdis said “God gets the glory” for all her accomplishments.
Church membership was important to Merdis, although showing up in fine hats and Cadillacs, her worship was the most valued. She instilled into her family, the importance of having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
Merdis will be greeted in heaven by her parents, her only daughter: Gearldine Wren, her Husband: Nathaniel Word, her Siblings: Odessa, Calvin, Eddie, Lee, Curtis, Lessie, Ruth, Dorothy, Lillie, and Martha. Her granddaughter: Victoria Norton-Poole and her 3 rd generation grandchildren: Jaris Wilson and Kourtney Freeman. Merdis’s legacy will be carried on by: Her Sister: Edith Marshall, her Grandchildren: Tonie, Keith (Phyllis), Daniel, Lorenzo, Larry (Lisa), Dece, Cynthia, Randi, all generations of grandchildren, Nieces and Nephews. She will forever be remembered by a Host of family and friends.
Funeral service will be 12:30PM, Friday, August 9, 2024, at Koinonia Bible Church, 7020 Richmond, Raytown, MO 64133. Visitation will begin prior to services at 11:30AM. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.
