Margaret “Peggy” Michaels, O.F.S. (nee Melia)

It is with profound sadness that the family of Margaret “Peggy” Michaels announces her passing on Monday, March 23rd at the age of 81 years. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 62 years, Henry Michaels; children Paul Michaels (Lori) of Kansas City, Ed Michaels (Dana) of Kansas City, and Teresa Oliver of Raytown; 8 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren; brother, Dr. Bernard Melia (Mary) of Overland Park.

Peggy was born in Kansas City, MO to Bernard and Margaret Melia. She attended Bishop Lillis High School for 2 years and graduated from Ursuline Academy in Paola, KS. In 1954 a friend set Peggy up with a blind date; 3 years later, in 1957 she married her sweetheart Henry Michaels. They soon moved to Virginia where Henry was serving in the Air Force at Langley Air Force Base. Sons Paul and Ed were born during their time in Virginia, and later they welcomed daughter Teresa in Warrensburg, Missouri. Peggy and Henry returned to Kansas City after Henry was honorably discharged from the Air Force, where they stayed and raised their family. Peggy worked in retail sales, and retired from K-Mart with 25 years of service.

Peggy was a devout Catholic and lived a life of faith and serving others. She was a Secular Franciscan of the Holy Eucharist at the Sisters of Saint Francis, in Independence. She was an active member of St. Bernadette’s Parish in Kansas City where she served the church in many capacities including Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion at mass and to the homebound, BeFriender Minister and choir member.

Peggy loved to cook, read (especially cookbooks) and relished a hot pot of tea. She was a proud member of the Red Hat Society and T.O.P.S. where she made many friends. Peggy would lovingly mentor anyone seeking guidance and support. She thoroughly enjoyed theater, especially musical productions. She was often in the audience at Starlight Theater, Kansas City Music Hall, Kauffman Center for Performing Arts and MTH Theater.
