She graduated from Windom High School in 1949, then attended Mankato State Teacher’s College where she received her degree in Art Education with a Minor in Physical Education and Mathematics. She also attended Scarritt College where she studied theology. Dorothy began her teaching career in Newport News, VA, where she met and married her husband of 56 years, Albert Mitchell, in December 1958. She and Albert traveled to Cuba, where Al served in the military, and she taught school. They ended up settling in the Kansas City area where he ended his Navy service in 1964. They built a home and started their family in Raytown, MO, and adopted 2 sons, Eric in 1964, and David in 1966. Dorothy was a substitute teacher in the Raytown School District from 1971 until 1990. Teaching was her passion. She loved working with the youth in the community and even after her teaching career ended, she volunteered as a “Youth Friend” for another 10 years tutoring middle school students in math. She was very active in her church serving in several leadership positions up until 2018. She volunteered in the Office at Blue Ridge Presbyterian Church one day per week. She volunteered for the summer lunch program in Raytown for several years. She was also very involved with cub scouts, and boy scouts with her two sons and saw them both through to the rank of Eagle Scout. She loved, laughed and lived life to the fullest doing all the things she dreamed of doing as a child including traveling the world. She was proceeded in death by her husband Albert (Mitch) Mitchell, and son David, and Brother Leland Bochman. She leaves behind her Son Eric Mitchell (wife Debbi), Grandson John Mitchell (wife Jennifer), two sisters Florence Behrens (Bochman), and Cynthia Brewer (Bochman) (Daughter Babette), and many nieces, nephews, and grandnieces/nephews, as well as community of friends too numerous to count.
