It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, sister, and friend, Norma Leona Gunner (née Smith), who peacefully left us on December 30, 2024, at the age of 73. Norma was born on December 12, 1951, to Harriette E. Smith (née Wright) and the late William Smith. She was a loving wife to the Laval C. Gunner and a cherished mother to five children: Prenness’ E. Josey-Person, Drew S. Josey, Vannessa L. Josey, Derrick L. Gunner, and Chie’ A. Gunner. Norma is also survived by her dear siblings, James “Scott” Smith, Sheldon Smith, and Bertha Mae Smith, along with many other relatives and friends whose lives she touched deeply.
In addition to her children, Norma leaves behind seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, all of whom were a source of immeasurable joy to her. She was a proud and loving grandmother and great-grandmother, and her legacy will live on through the generations she helped shape and nurture.
Norma lived her life with an extraordinary warmth and an unwavering love for her family. A woman of grace and strength, she faced every challenge with courage, and her spirit never faltered. She was a woman of deep faith and kindness, always finding joy in the little things — whether it was a moment spent with her children, a conversation on the phone, or the quiet solace of writing. Writing, a passion she held close, allowed Norma to express the depths of her heart and soul.
Though she experienced her share of struggles, it was her infectious laughter, boundless generosity, and endless capacity to love that will forever define her legacy. Norma’s laughter, often heard in the warmth of a shared story or the simplicity of a fond memory, brought light to everyone who had the privilege of knowing her. She was an embodiment of resilience and joy, teaching us all that love knows no limits and that family is everything.
Her peaceful passing was surrounded by the love and comfort of her family, a testament to the deep connections she cultivated throughout her life. She leaves behind not just a family, but a legacy of love, compassion, and strength that will continue to inspire us every day.
A celebration of life service will be held on January 10, 2025, at 10:00 AM at Park Lawn Funeral Home, where we will gather to honor and remember the beautiful woman who gave us so much. We find comfort in knowing that her love, wisdom, and light will forever remain with us, guiding us through all the days ahead.
Norma Leona Gunner will always be remembered for her limitless love, her boundless joy, and her unshakable faith in the power of family. May she rest in eternal peace.
