Walter N. Overton

March 21, 1930 — March 24, 2021

Deacon Walter N. Overton, born March 21, 1930, departed this life on March 24, 2021 with his loving wife and friends close at his bedside. Born in Prairie Home, Missouri, he was the first born to William W. Overton and Eola Coleman, and was the only child born to this union. Deacon Overton was raised in the Boonville community by his grandmother, Mrs. Laura Overton, who taught him a strong work ethic and instilled in him a love for his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

On May 2, 1950 he pledged his love for Jo Dorsey Howell when the two united in holy matrimony and became life partners, remaining faithful until death.

Over the years, Deacon Overton worked for the Armour Meat Packing Company, and later retired from the Kansas City Public School system where he served in janitorial maintenance.

His demonstrated love for Jesus Christ and God’s people led to his appointment to serve as a deacon in St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church, under the leadership of Rev. Stewart Johnson, where he found a church family that loved him dearly. In addition to the Deacon Board, he served with the Men’s Chorus, Laymen’s Ministry, Sunday School, and was there to support the church wherever the worship opportunity carried him.

There are two words that best describe his life and service: good and faithful.

He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 71 years, Jo Dorsey, and a host of other relatives and friends who will miss him dearly.
