Grace Allen Carter Petty, 92, a lifelong Clay County resident, passed away February 16, 2022, at Oak Pointe of Kearney. She was surrounded by loved ones in her final days.
Grace was born December 16, 1929, in Liberty, Missouri to Graham William Carter and Cecil Elizabeth (Johnston) Carter. She attended Liberty public schools, graduating from high school in 1948. In later years she received her teacher's certificate from Central Missouri State University.
Grace married the love of her life, Edgar N. Petty, on August 7, 1948, and they were together for 61 remarkable years. Her husband, parents and siblings: William G. Carter, Gail Carter Hufft and George L. Carter preceded her in death.
Grace touched the lives of so many in her exceptional walk through life. She was a teacher to many and an inspiration to all who knew her. Grace became a china painter and then taught it, became a tole painter and then taught it, became a quilt maker and then taught it, became a flower arranger and then taught it, and became a woodwork artist and then taught it.
Grace was a longtime member of Chandler Baptist Church, volunteering in the library and teaching Sunday school. She was a member of P.E.O. Sisterhood Chapter KO, was recognized by FFA as an Honorary Chapter Farmer, and served as a 4-H leader who encouraged and challenged kids to believe in better. Grace notably soared to enormous heights in the Longaberger Basket Company for over 25 years, which was her career passion.
What set Grace Petty apart in a special category was her engaging personality, boundless energy, the incredible joy she demonstrated in all activities, and her infectious smile. Beyond that, Grace was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Her loving support and encouragement for her family and friends will remain her forever legacy.
Grace is survived by her sons, Caleb (Colleen) of Liberty, Donald of Kearney, and Allen of Kearney; grandsons, Brandon (Jessica), Brett (Marissa) and Eric Brant; great grandchildren, Carter, Chloe, Emery and Evelyn; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
