Petty, Grace Allen Carter

Petty, Grace Allen Carter

December 16, 1929 — February 16, 2022

Grace Allen Carter Petty, 92, a lifelong Clay County resident, passed away February 16, 2022, at Oak Pointe of Kearney. She was surrounded by loved ones in her final days.

Grace was born December 16, 1929, in Liberty, Missouri to Graham William Carter and Cecil Elizabeth (Johnston) Carter. She attended Liberty public schools, graduating from high school in 1948. In later years she received her teacher's certificate from Central Missouri State University.

Grace married the love of her life, Edgar N. Petty, on August 7, 1948, and they were together for 61 remarkable years. Her husband, parents and siblings: William G. Carter, Gail Carter Hufft and George L. Carter preceded her in death.

Grace touched the lives of so many in her exceptional walk through life. She was a teacher to many and an inspiration to all who knew her. Grace became a china painter and then taught it, became a tole painter and then taught it, became a quilt maker and then taught it, became a flower arranger and then taught it, and became a woodwork artist and then taught it.

Grace was a longtime member of Chandler Baptist Church, volunteering in the library and teaching Sunday school. She was a member of P.E.O. Sisterhood Chapter KO, was recognized by FFA as an Honorary Chapter Farmer, and served as a 4-H leader who encouraged and challenged kids to believe in better. Grace notably soared to enormous heights in the Longaberger Basket Company for over 25 years, which was her career passion.

What set Grace Petty apart in a special category was her engaging personality, boundless energy, the incredible joy she demonstrated in all activities, and her infectious smile. Beyond that, Grace was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Her loving support and encouragement for her family and friends will remain her forever legacy.

Grace is survived by her sons, Caleb (Colleen) of Liberty, Donald of Kearney, and Allen of Kearney; grandsons, Brandon (Jessica), Brett (Marissa) and Eric Brant; great grandchildren, Carter, Chloe, Emery and Evelyn; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Due to the unusual nature of these times and out of concern for the health of others, the immediate family will observe a private service with burial following at Glenridge Cemetery.

In memory of Grace, the family suggests contributions to the Chandler Baptist Church Building Fund, 11401 NE State Route 33, Liberty, MO 64068.

Brandon and Brett, you are so fortunate to have had her as a grandma! I remember her smile and giggle. I remember how creative she was. I remember going to her house once over 30 years ago to an Open House Longaberger/craft party. I remember her making a tee-pee for your kids. I remember being on a committee with her and marveling at her creativity, her ideas. I remember her love for Christ and family. Knowing her was a privilege and a treat! Brandon, Jessica, Carter, Chloe, Brett, Marissa, Emory, and Evelyn- Live like Grandma! Live BIG! Use all the talents God gives you and be as happy as Grandma! Love Jesus like Grandma! She gave you a great path in which to follow...

I am grateful to be a part of the host of people whose lives Grace touched with her loyalty, affection, talent - and great giggles!! I cannot even picture her without a smile on her face. Her participation in projects and events I was a part of always brought with it a sense of wonder and affirmation of others. Because I met Grace in the latter years of her life, learning of all her accomplishments earlier in life was actually a little bit of a surprise, for she never strutted those successes or wore them like a badge of honor. Rather, she modestly turned her energies toward affirming others. Wow! What a gift to us. Thank you to the family for YOUR most recent gift, reminding us, through her warm and lovely obituary, of the many facets of your mother. To say "They don't make 'em like that any more" is an understatement. David joins me in expressing our sympathy to you as you say goodbye to a dear, dear woman. We know how blessed we were to have been the beneficiaries of her loving support, quickly acknowledging how her family members extended her days of being able to continue to express that.

Condolence to the Petty family. Grace and Edgar became friends from the Farmland and CO-OP world but became community friends that I always enjoy seeing and visiting with.
