Richard F. Horton, passed away peacefully on April 15th, 2024 in Kansas City, MO at the age of 86. Richard was born July 5th, 1937 in Kansas City, MO to Floyd and Dortha Horton, and was the youngest of two siblings.
He was preceded in death by his loving and devoted wife Gail of 61 years whom he missed dearly since her passing in May 2023, and also his grandson Taylor Beer who was taken too soon in Dec. 2023.
Richard was a loving father to four children, Catherine, Steve (Becky), Todd, and Beth who will all miss his fatherly advice whenever it was called upon.
He treasured his grandchildren, Richard (Kyra), Stephanie, Taylor, Rachel, Savana, and Stevie Horton. Dustin and Traver (Amber) Marks. Along with several great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind his sister Marcia.
He loved the lake, spending his childhood going to the Ozarks, led him and Gail to get their own place at the Ozarks. There were many summers and weekends spent boating, fishing, swimming, and relaxing with family and friends.
When he was younger, he flew single and twin-engine planes to various locations around the country, and eventually ended up owning a couple of successful businesses. Being a pilot was one of his greatest joys, and flying his family on vacations are memories they will never forget.
After retirement, he decided he would build a couple of airplanes. One of the ones he built was a World War I Fokker D7 Biplane. He started building it in his garage at home, and all of the neighbors would stop to look, but eventually moved it out to a hangar at the Grain Valley airport where he worked endlessly on it down to the last detail. Once finished, the day came to fly it. His wife, children, and grandchildren watched nervously as he took off, and up he went without a hitch. It was a very proud moment for him and one we all will never forget.
He liked to stay busy, and if you needed something fixed or built he could do it. All you had to do was tell him what you wanted and he would get to the drawing board, and next thing you knew it would be sitting in his shop. He was always coming up with ideas or contraptions to make things easier around the house. He also loved to put together model planes and puzzles.
He was a wonderful and dedicated father, who loved nothing more in the world than his family. Fly high Dad.
Services will be Monday, April 22, 2024 at 1PM, at the Park Lawn Funeral home at 8251 Hillcrest Rd in Kansas City, MO: burial to follow Green Lawn Cemetery.
