Johnny Stephens Smith, 91, of Liberty, MO, passed away December 14, 2022, at his home surrounded by loved ones.
Johnny was born January 21, 1931 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the youngest of three children of Albert Cleveland Smith and Gertrude Inah (Dotson) Smith. He graduated in 1948 from Daniel Webster High School in Tulsa. Following high school graduation, Johnny served in the US Air Force, including an assignment at the Tokyo weather station. Following active duty, Johnny would eventually receive honorable discharge from the Air Force Reserves in 1966 which included receiving his Bachelor’s degree from Oklahoma State University in 1958. Johnny subsequently began his career with the National Weather Bureau that spanned 30 years to retire in 1988 and included time with a rather elite assignment at the Regional Weather Coordination Center-RWCC (1973—1975) as Regional Special Services Meteorologist from which he was recipient of the Silver Medal Award, the second highest honorary award given by the U.S. Dept of Commerce.
Along with his parents, Johnny was preceded in death by a son, Stephen L. Smith; and siblings, Ruth E. Smith, Alvin L. Smith and sister-in-law Jacquelyn Perry-Smith.
Survivors include his wife, Juanita P. Shultz; sons, Jack L. Smith, John M. Smith, Jeffrey W. Smith and Roger A. Smith (Kim); step children, Bradley L. Shultz (Karen), Scott L. Shultz (Cheryl), Lisa A. Hendrix (Luther) and Robert L. Shultz (Janel); eight step grandchildren and five step great grandchildren. Johnny also leaves his niece, Cheryl K. Cleland (Bill), nephew, Alan R. Smith (Jamie), and their families.
Visitation will be held from 4-6 pm Tuesday, December 20, at Park Lawn Northland Chapel, I-35 at State Route 291, Liberty, MO. Graveside services will be held at 1:00 pm Wednesday, December 28, at Clinton Oaks Cemetery, Tulsa, OK.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Kansas City Hospice.
