Our sincerest condolences to Juanita and the Smith families. We enjoyed spending time with both Johnny and Juanita when they visited back home in Tulsa. Johnny was a sweet and good natured man. We always enjoyed hearing his stories about the weather service and particularly in the Great Lakes Region.

I am the granddaughter of Weaver Smith, who was the brother of Johnny's father Albert. We used to visit Aunt Gertrude in Carbondale when I was a little girl. I was so sorry to hear of Johnny's passing. I live in the Tulsa area and would have attended the graveside service if I had known. I'm so sorry for your loss. I would love to make connection with any of my Smith cousins if you feel like contacting me. My email is [email protected]

My deepest sympathies to Juanita and Johnny's family. I worked with Johnny at the National Weather Service Central Region Headquarters from 1979 till he retired (mid-80's). Always knew him to be a cheerful and upbeat man that was willing to help me understand the ropes of working at Region. Johnny, along with Don Whitman and Bob Brauch were instrumental in developing CMAWDS, a ship to shore communications system to send ship weather observations, which made Great Lakes marine forecasts much better for the ships!
