Sr. Frank Smocks

Frank Smocks, Sr. was born November 13, 1945 to the parents of Theodore and Armenthia Smocks in Kansas City, Missouri. Frank passed away July 27, 2020. His final days were spent at home surrounded by family and friends he loved so much.

He graduated from Central high school where he remained an active alumnus. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Park University. He was employed by the United States Postal Service for thirty-two years before he retired from federal service as a Human Resources Manager.

Frank married Georgia (Powell) Smocks and they were married for fifty-five years until death separated them. They enjoyed building their life together with one son Frank J. Smocks Jr. They enjoyed many years of traveling and various interests and hobbies they shared together.

Frank was very friendly and was known for making friends wherever he went. During his lifetime he had several passions in which he served and helped others. Early in his adult life he coached for the Boy and Girls Club of America and had lasting relationships with the community. He was a board member for the Central Communications Credit Union for twenty-three years where he was faithful in the mission of the organization. After retirement he started his own contracting and remodeling business where he worked tirelessly as a contractor providing affordable remodeling jobs for others and was known as a master craftsman. He could be found around town helping those who needed work done to their homes and often performed charitable deeds for others such as building handicap ramps for the elderly. He worked with his son Frank Smocks Jr. and brother in law Robert Perry building decks and performing remodeling jobs for many families throughout the metropolitan area for a number of years. He had a love for gardening for many years and maintained a family garden where he shared the fruits of his labor with others. He seized the opportunity to organize and start the Seven Oaks Community Garden where he continued his passion for gardening and helping others in the community, working tirelessly to provide fresh produce for the neighborhood and surrounding communities in need. He cared deeply about the neighborhood to his family home of fifty-two years and actively served as the Board Chairman for the Seven Oaks Neighborhood Association to maintain and preserve the neighborhood. He worshipped at Graceway in Kansas City, Missouri and served in several ministries. He was active in Graceway’s men and greeter ministry and served as a small group leader for the Way of Life Group. His hobbies were gardening, being a local handyman for others and shopping where he shopped mostly to give to others.

He leaves his wife Georgia Smocks; two sons Frank J. Smocks (Carla) and Byron Townsend (Shelly); two brothers Theodore Smocks Jr. (Lou Faye) and Leroy Oliver; two sisters Rosalee Smocks and Ruth Alexander (Dallas); six grandchildren and five great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Frank is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers Ronald Oliver and Leroy Smocks; one sister Doris Quarrels; one granddaughter Keisha Clay.

A visitation will be 9-11AM, Thursday, August 6 at Graceway Church, 5460 Blue Ridge Cutoff.
