Duane Otis Steele

Duane Otis Steele, 83, of Lee’s Summit, MO, passed away December 30, 2019, at John Knox Care Center in Lee’s Summit, MO. Visitation will begin at 1:00 pm, followed by Masonic and Rose Croix services at 2:00 pm, on Friday, January 3, at the Park Lawn Chapel, 8251 Hillcrest Road, Kansas City, MO. Burial with military honors will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Ararat Shrine Hospital Transportation Fund, 5100 Ararat Drive, Kansas City, MO 64129.

Duane was born January 2, 1936, in Glenwood, IA, the son of Jesse and Rena (Powers) Steele.  Along with his parents, Duane was preceded in death by sister, Ladonna Thomas; and brother, Max Steele. He was united in marriage to Carol Ann Gerard Player on January 5, 1960.

Duane served in the U.S. Air Force from 1955 until receiving honorable discharge in 1959. His career as a Switchman for the Santa Fe Railroad spanned 40 years.

Duane served as Worshipful Master of McDonald and Cecile Daylight Masonic lodges, was a member of the Scottish Rite Valley of Kansas City, York Rite, and was a very active member of Ararat Shrine Temple. At Ararat, Duane was a longtime member of the Director’s Staff, served as President of Jackson County Shrine Club, and was a passionate volunteer and fundraiser for the Shrine Circus. Thousands of kids of all ages attended the circus thanks to Duane.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Carol; daughters, Gloria Clausing (J.R.) and Julina Ciafullo; grandchildren, Cameron, Caleb, Colter, Chase and Abrielle Clausing, Anna Harp, Elizabeth, Emma, Steele and Sydney Ciafullo, and four great grandchildren.
