Irene M. Tevis

June 6, 1928 — February 3, 2019

Juanita "Irene" Mawhiney Tevis left this world for the next part of her life with Jesus on February 3, 2019. She once had written that her strength had came from Jesus. She faithfully served her Lord as a care giver to many children besides her family and loved ones.

Irene was born June 6, 1928 at her grandmother's home in Urbana, Missouri, the first child of Bertha Fay Rash Mawhiney and Everett L. Mawhiney. She was baptized June 12, 1938 by her father E.L. Mawhiney and confirmed by A.E. Stark and E.D. Harpham at Urbana. Irene married Galen H. Tevis on October 5, 1946 at Fort Scott, Kansas. They lived on a small farm in Missouri and then lived at Marshall, where Irene worked at the shoe factory. They moved to Liberty in 1953.

About 1964, Irene started a day care in her home, and has taken care of many, many children over the years. For many years Irene was the secretary for the Women's Department at the Liberty Community of Christ. She baked several loaves of sweet breads for the bake sale each year.  Irene enjoyed working in the garden, mowing the yard, making things with plastic canvas, and sewing. Over the last few years she has made close to a hundred blankets for family and friends.

Along with her parents, Irene was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Mawhiney; husband, Galen H. Tevis; and four babies. Survivors include two brothers, Ronald Mawhiney (Lela) and Junior Mawhiney (Linda); Donald's wife, Mary Mawhiney; daughters, Peggy Deis (Greg), Donna Collum (John); son, Craig Tevis (Charlene); six grandchildren, Jeremy Collum, Michael Collum (Novella), Chandra Spero (Vince), Pam Deis, Jennifer Tevis and Danny Deis; and four great grandchildren, Leland Collum, Isabella Spero, Mathis Collum and Rosalee Spero. She will be missed by us all.

Visitation will begin at 2:00 pm, followed by funeral services at 3:00 pm, on Saturday, February 9, at Liberty Community of Christ Church. Burial will follow in Glenridge Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the church.
