Shirley Ann McMurray Trotter was born January 31st 1940 in Kansas City Missouri. She passed away unexpectedly in her sleep April 10th 2022. She was the oldest of 4 children to Thomas McMurray and Lillian Pauline McMurray both who preceded her in death. She attended grade school and highschool in Kansas City. She met the love of her life Walter E Trotter while working at Cinerama Theater. They were married July 25th 1959 and it was a love that would last for over 55 years. They always had so much love to give to family and friends. Her beloved Walter preceded her in death, passing away on February 5th 2016.
Shirley was blessed with 4 children David Michael who married Rita and had 3 of her grandchildren Sean, Robert, and Timothy. Her 2nd oldest was Daniel (Danny) Robert who married Cheryl and had 1 of her grandchildren Jacob. Her 3rd child was Diana Kristina who married Yassir and had 2 of her grandchildren Kamran and Amber. Diana preceded her in death April 24th 2010. Her youngest child was Denise Renee who had 2 grandchildren Conner and Grace.
Shirley loved spending time with her brother and sisters and celebrating all of life's memories through the years. Her brother Thomas ( Tommy ) McMurray was married to Kay. Tommy preceded her in death December 30th 2009. Her sister Karen McMurray Rothrock was married to Rick Rothrock and her sister Debra McMurray Kronsbein was married to Jim Kronsbein. Shirley had nothing but love for all of her family, brothers and sisters and her nieces and nephews.
Shirley loved traveling with Walt and her family. Each year they traveled to different National Parks including Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, Smoky Mountains, and Mount Rushmore. Initially they camped in a small pop-up camper. After the kids were gone, she and Walter got a larger camper so they could travel for months. .They spent time exploring their favorite spots in Morro Bay California, Lake Havasu, Arizona, South Padre Island Texas, and Sedona, Arizona. They also loved spending time in Woodland Park Colorado near where Walter used to spend his summers as a boy by Pikes Peak.
Shirley was a phenomenal cook and baker. She loved baking pies and cakes and always would make a special cake for you on your birthday. Walter loved her German Chocolate Cake, David always enjoyed her Pineapple Upside Down Cake and Danny craved her Apple Pie. When Shirley would make her famous spaghetti and meatballs it was always a hit with the family. The meatballs were the size of baseballs and amazingly delicious. She always loved cooking for others and that is how she found her way to working for a local elementary school in their cafeteria. Because she loved being around people she found her way later into retail and spent years working on the Country Club Plaza at a number of shops in Seville Square.
Shirley loved lots of hobbies including working on 1000 + piece puzzles, playing yahtzee, and gardening. She had such a green thumb and could make just about anything grow. She had a small garden where she enlisted her kids to help her grow corn, tomatoes, cucumbers, and lettuce. Later she spent time with her flowers, plants, and cactus. In addition to her plants she loved her animals and always had numerous cats and dogs through the years. Her latest was her special dog Maggie and just recently her kitten SAM named after her childhood initials.
Services for Shirley will be held Tuesday, April 19th at St. Catherine of Sienna Catholic Church 4101 E 105th Terrace, Kansas City, MO 64137. There will be a Rosary at 9:00 am followed by a visitation from 9:30 - 10:30 am and a Catholic Mass at 10:30 am followed by a graveside service at Mount Moriah Cemetery, 10507 Holmes Rd, Kansas City, MO 64131.
Thank you so much to family and friends for all of your continued love & support. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in her name to the American Cancer Society or to the pet shelter Wayside Waifs.
