Mary Helen Urias

July 30, 1946 — November 3, 2020

Mary Helen Urias (Maria Elena Hernandez), age 74, passed away peacefully on November 3, 2020. She was born on July 30, 1946 in New Mexico to Amalia Hernandez Larez and Jose Yturralde. She grew up in Big Spring, Texas and moved to Kansas City, Missouri after she was married to Jose Valenzuela Urias on March 30, 1965.

Mary brought joy and life to those around her. She was a great cook and showed her love through the food she made and served at St. Joseph's Hospital, Luby’s Cafe and Spofford Home. She was a faithful member of St. Matthew’s Catholic Church and in her later years, volunteered to assist with funerals and worked to create rosaries by hand to bring people some peace during their time of grief.

Mary’s happiness came from her joy and love for her family. Her mother, Amalia, built a big, beautiful family and Mary carried on that tradition by having five children of her own. She gave her children the gift of laughter, a love of music and dancing and the foundation that family is everything.

Mary is survived by her husband Jose Urias; siblings: Brothers: Adolfo Larez; Andy Hernandez and his wife Magge and by her sisters: Julia Correa; Adelinda Longoria, her husband Andrew; Jessie Martinez, her husband Manuel; and Cynthia Hernandez.

Mary is also survived by her children: Hilda Cisneros, her husband James and their children Stephen, Jennifer and Javier; Lupe Urias, his wife Leah Urias and their children Heather, Caleb, Lucas and Logan and great grand-children Aiden and Jade; Charles Urias, his wife Tamara and their children Rebekkah and Lexi and great grand-child Aiden; Susan Shuler, her husband Frank and their children Jay and his partner Ashley, Kimberly and her husband Jonathan; Vanesa Kline, her wife Tashia and their son Sawyer. Plus her loving family from Big Spring, Texas and beyond.

Mary had a warm and generous light that was seen and felt by those around her. We are all thankful to have been a part of her light and we will all miss her more than words can express.
