Velda Cantrell was born Velda Audean Sanders on April 17, 1936, at home in Wild Cherry, Arkansas to James and Edna Sanders. She was one of six children. Velda married Harold W. Cantrell December 10, 1951, in Mitchell, Arkansas.
Velda and Harold relocated to Kansas City. Together they had five children. Ricky, Velda, Mike, Teresa, and Vicky. She had 10 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren,1 great-great-grandson. She later married Oscar Gile. While working on her CNA she worked at a laundry mat, a restaurant and a nursing home.
Velda had a strong work ethic in her professional life and her home life. She worked at Avon for 22 years before it closed the KC center. After earning her CNA through Park College Velda worked for over 21 years at Little Sisters Of the Poor where she retired from.
Velda loved flowers and plants and always had her porch covered in plants; she also had beautiful roses along the house. She enjoyed getting together for a yearly reunion with her Avon co-workers. Her grandchildren loved visiting her home for Chocolate Malt O Meal. She put her family first and would do anything for them, she had a warm and loving smile and laugh.
Velda is preceded in death by her parents, one brother Owen Sanders, one sister Sharon Maguffee, infant son Ricky, daughter Velda Spencer, daughter Teresa Talbert, grandson Adam Cantrell and Brad Smith.
She leaves behind her Brother Donnie Sanders of Alton, Missouri; sister, Wilma Comstock of West Plains, Missouri, and Polly York and husband Bob of Koshkonong, Son Mike Cantrell ( Donna) of Oklahoma, Vicky Cantrell KC, Grandchildren Sam (Betsy) Hanks - KS, Jimmy (Danielle) Spencer – MD, Megan (Frank) Straley – MI, Allan Cantrell – OK, Timothy (Audrey) Cantrell – OK, John Garcia – OK, Robert Macklin – MO, Janie (Vic) Phillips – MO, Sherri Hodgin – MO. Great great grandchildren Joey Hanks, Nick Hanks, and Elizabeth all of KS, Gavin and Wyatt of MD, Kyleigh, Kaydence, Gavin, Jerzey, and Mya Cantrell of OK, Bella and Daxtyn Garcia of OK, Collin, Dianna, and Kyle Phillips of MO, Dalton and Angelica (Aaron) Smith of MO, Nal-ij, Zo’e, Armon’E, and JR of MO. Great great grandson Hunter.
Graveside service will be April 8, 2025, at 2pm at Park Lawn Kansas City Missouri. Enter Gate 4, and go towards the back. Block 32 she is across from the mausoleum at the far back of the Cemetery.
