Vera Lee Hanson was born on October 4, 1938 on a farm in Luverne, Minnesota to Hans Martin Hanson & Eulela Wiseman Hanson where she grew up with three brothers, Gene, James, and Cleon, and a sister, Phyllis.
After graduating from High School, Vera moved to Portland, Oregon to work for an airline company. It was there that she met a young man named Walter Randall Young who was working for Hughes Aircraft and on a 90-day temporary assignment in Portland. The two had apartments in the same building and began dating.
When Randy’s assignment ended, he returned to Los Angeles and the two stayed in touch by letter. One day Vera received a letter from him with a marriage proposal in it which she said she immediately accepted. They were married on July 18, 1959 in Englewood, California. They raised two children, Walter Randall and Tammy Lynn. Later, their family grew with three grandsons, Dakota James, Frisco Reese, and Matthew Scott.
During their 62 years together, Vera and Randy lived in eight different states because of Randy’s career as a Computer Systems Engineer. They were separated only upon Randy’s death on New Year’s day in 2022.
Vera loved to cross-stitch and had created many beautiful wall hangings over the years. She also enjoyed meeting weekly with a dedicated group of friends known as the “Stitcher Girls”.
Vera spent many years as a certified food handler for the In As Much Ministry Food Pantry here in Liberty where she made many friends.
Vera was also a faithful member of the Liberty United Methodist Church and the Sojourner Sunday School class where she helped prepare Communion elements each first Sunday of the Month.
