Beverly Jean Viter

March 7, 1935 — June 8, 2019

Beverly Jean Viter, 84, of Independence, MO, returned to her heavenly home on June 8, 2019.

Beverly, who went by Jean, was born on March 7, 1935 in Kansas City, MO, to parents Marvin J McCormick and Irene E Barr (O’Halloran). Her mother soon married her stepfather, Joseph O’Halloran. Together they had two more children William and Robert O’Halloran. Jean, being ten years older always looked out for her two little brothers and shared a close relationship with them up until their passing.

Jean grew up in Kansas City, MO and graduated from East High School. Jean was a Christian woman whose faith influenced her life from an early age. She would walk herself to church as a child, never missing a Sunday. As a young girl her most cherished memories were visiting her uncle Elmer’s farm in Holden, MO riding horses and playing with the farm animals.

In 1953 she met her future husband, Richard “Dick” Viter, 92. They met while she was working at Poindexter’s retail and Dick was working at Folgers Coffee Company across the street. He still fondly recalls seeing her through the window and being struck by her natural beauty and petite frame. They would send notes back and forth to each other across the street and as they say, the rest is history. They married on November 23, 1954, and would have celebrated 65 years this November.

Dick and Jean moved to Independence and had two daughters, Theresa Irene Vaughn (Tom Shoemaker) and Jennifer Lynn Hogan (Tom Hogan). From the very beginning, she dedicated her children to God and took them to Church every Sunday. She was very involved with the church, Abiding Savior Lutheran Church. She taught Sunday school as well as summer bible school.

Jean went to work for the City of Independence in the finance department for over 45 years until she retired. Jean and Dick were blessed with their only grandchild, Lindsey Jean Minnick, of Lenexa, KS and in March of 2018 Jean became a great grandmother to McCrae Minnick.

Jean had the warmest heart; always ready to help those around her without hesitation. She will be remembered for her deep devotion to her family and unbreakable faith in her Lord and Savior.
