Helen Garey Webb

Helen Garey Webb, 92, formerly of Liberty, MO, went to her heavenly home on October 13, 2019. Born on a farm in St. Clair County, MO, on July 21, 1927, she was the only child of Orvell and Mary Garey. Helen attended a one-room schoolhouse, Potts School, from first through eighth grade, and Appleton City High School from 1941-1945. After graduating as salutatorian, she moved to Kansas City to attend Central Business College where she had received a scholarship. In 1946, she took a secretarial job at Fitts Dry Goods there where she met and began dating Rhea Cole Webb who had recently returned from serving in the Navy during WWII. Demonstrating her life-long love of travel, however, she soon put their relationship on hold while taking a trip to California where she worked briefly as a secretary in San Francisco and visited with her mother’s uncle and his wife in Encinitas. Upon her return, she married Rhea in 1947 and both accepted Christ as their Savior while attending Kansas City Baptist Temple. Rhea subsequently enrolled in Kansas City Bible College to pursue a career in the ministry, and after he graduated in 1959, helped establish Calvary Baptist Church in Liberty, MO, where they moved in 1962. Throughout Rhea’s ministry and their marriage, Helen continued working at various jobs to help support their family before being hired by the Clay County Collector’s Office on a part-time basis in 1974. She assumed full-time responsibilities there as Deputy Collector in 1976 and remained in that position until retiring in 1994. Following Rhea’s death in 2001, Helen traveled extensively throughout the United States and enjoyed visiting with her friends and family. She is survived by her children, Larry, Stephen, Jonathan, Philip and Mary Lois (Racine), eleven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

A visitation in memory of Helen will be held from 4-6 pm Thursday, October 31, at Park Lawn Northland Chapel, 1640 N. 201 Hwy., Liberty, MO. Committal services will be held at 10:00 am Friday, November 1, at the Leavenworth National Cemetery in Leavenworth, Kansas. Memorials are suggested to the Liberty Women’s Clinic.
