Wilma Maxine John

Wilma Maxine (Coffey) John passed away April 30, 2024 at the age of 72. Born October 7, 1952 in Kansas City, Missouri, Wilma was a loving wife and mother.

Wilma was the only child born to Myrtle Melvina (Engle) Coffey and William Augustine Coffey on October 7, 1952. She graduated from Skyline High School in Urbana, MO in 1969 and trained as a Radiographic Technologist at Penn Valley Community College in Kansas City.

She was baptized at First Baptist Church of Kansas City, MO where she met her husband, Thomas John, and they were married on December 16, 1978. Thom and Wilma enjoyed 45 years of marriage, raising 3 sons along the way.

After 20 years working as an X-ray tech, she went back to school to train as a Medical Records Coder at Penn Valley Community College and graduated with a 4.0 GPA and was awarded Phi Theta Kappa. She worked as a coder at Research Medical Center for 22 years. She was a Cub Scout Den Mother for her boys and active in the PTA at Boone Elementary School, serving as PTA president and received a Missouri Life award. She also taught Sunday School at First Baptist Church and Holmeswood Baptist Church.

For the last several years, Wilma was active at Calvary Lutheran Church as part of the altar guild and as an avid quilter. She would lend her expertise in making quilts throughout the year for the annual fundraising sale at Calvary.

She is survived by her husband Thom, her son Eric (Heather) and 2 granddaughters Gretchen and Keara of Kansas City, MO, son Stephen and grandson Alexander of St. Louis, MO, and son Paul (Lora Modlin) and 2 granddaughters Gwyneth and Fern of Clackamas, Oregon.

Wilma lived a full and happy life, surrounded by family and friends. She was dearly loved and will be deeply missed. Visitation will be 5-7PM, Monday, May 6 at Park Lawn Funeral Home, 8251 Hillcrest Rd., Kansas City, MO. Funeral services will be at 1030AM, Tuesday, May 7 at Calvary Lutheran Church, 7500 Oak St., Kansas City MO; private burial in Memorial Park Cemetery following.

In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be directed to American Heart Association or the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
