Sr. Thomas A. Winston

Born April 4, 1918 in Vance, Mississippi to Peggy and Percy Winston. He passed away at home in Kansas City, Missouri on February 27, 2021 at the tender age of 102. Thomas was the youngest of 6 children and the last to join his parents and siblings in death. Thomas attended schools in Clarksdale, Mississippi completing the 8th Grade at Aggie High School before he was called home to work at the farm with his family. He learned to drive at age 9 in order to drive his mother around while his father was at work. He then used that skill to taxi for other families to make extra money. Thomas returned to school and studied agriculture. Thomas entered into World War II August 23, 1943 and served in the 389th Aviation Squadron in the Army and was a Construction Technician and Rifle Sharpshooter. He was honorably discharged May 31, 1945. He organized the AmVet Post 68 in Kansas City, Missouri in the early 1960's. In his civilian life, Thomas was a laborer, slaughter and meat packer in St. Louis before he moved to Kansas City. The last 40 years of his career he was a Contractor and Plumber and retired at the ripe age of 95 years old. He leaves to cherish his beloved wife of 64 years, Betty Winston, his 8 children, a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Tom will be remembered as a loving family man, hunter, fisherman as well as trustee and Elder at the Swope Parkway United Christian Church where he attended until his passing. Funeral services for family only. Visitation and Gravesite for friends and families.
