On February 5th, 2023, Dr. Robert “Bob” Lee Wolgamott peacefully passed away at home surrounded by his family. He was 73 years old, and was a loving husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle and friend.
Robert was born to Thurman and Bessie “Dean” Wolgamott on January 1st, 1950, in Kansas City, Missouri. After graduating from Northeast High School in 1968, he obtained a Master’s Degree in History from the University of Missouri, Kansas City and a Doctoral Degree in Philosophy and Higher Education from the University of Kansas.
Robert married Mayla Adnan Hayany-Wolgamott, his wife of 48 years, on October 20th, 1974. Together they raised three daughters, Aisha Suzanne Mary Katherine, Claire Georgianna Yveline and Juliet Maria Deanna. He worked for The Kansas City Star for 30 years, retiring in 2015. He was a life-long scholar and historian. He had a passion for reading, listening to and playing music, collecting coins and political memorabilia and coaching his daughters’ softball, basketball and volleyball teams. More than anything, he loved spending time with his family at home, and playing with his beloved grandsons and dogs.
Robert was predeceased by his parents, Thurman and Bessie Dean Wolgamott and his brother Walter Keith Wolgamott. He is survived by his wife, Mayla, daughters Aisha, Claire and Juliet, grandsons Gannon and Alexander and son-in-law Benjamin. He will forever be loved and missed.
A memorial service will be held on a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in his name to the ACLU or to the Kansas City Pet Project.
